A Writing Marathon · 7 November 2012

The end is nowhere in sight, but I hope I can finish this race. I hope I can keep writing about this experiment on myself until I come to the appointed end.

Writing every day is like running a marathon. Not that I would know what running a marathon is like, nor do I anticipate running one any time soon (or at all). But I can imagine what it would be like to keep running through all the miles to finally get to the finish line. Or maybe what I imagine are the miles it takes to get to the race.

In that case, I suppose that writing every day is more like training for a marathon. I may not get all the words right or give as much substance as I really want, but I am writing the words and completing the thoughts. Like a marathoner would put in the miles getting ready for the actual event. I am not sure what my actual event is, but I do know that putting in the miles or words is training me for something. At the very least, I am training to be a better writer. Whether the training leads to a book or a new writing gig or something totally unexpected does not really matter. All that matters is that I am writing every day.

It is a strange twist. By writing every day, I am training myself to be and actually being a writer. I am training for and participating in a writing marathon at the same time. I hope I can finish the training. And the race.
