Inertia · 13 November 2012

Inertia is a difficult thing to overcome. A paraphrase of Newton’s First Law of motion says that a body at rest tends to stay at rest and a body in motion tends to stay in motion. This law of inertia applies to people as well as inanimate objects.

We tend to want to sit when we are sitting and to keep going when are going. We even say that we are “on a roll” when we are going and do not want to stop. We are inertial beings.

Personally, when I am working out in some way, I do not need motivation to keep going. I just keep going. Whether it is running or just doing a few push-ups in the morning, I can keep up with the routine once I start. The problem is that when I stop, inertia shows its ugly side.

I have been doing push-ups, pull-ups, and a few other exercises as part of my morning routine for years. As a result, I can only go for a few days without before my body starts rebelling and inertia wants me to get back into the swing of things. I want that same inertia for a running routine as well. I suppose I just need to start.

I know it sounds like I am trying to convince myself, but I do want to run. I enjoy it now that I can run without my knees hurting. I just need to start again. For once I start and get a routine, I know I can keep going. I just need to overcome that difficult thing called inertia.
