I forgot an important indicator that I am healthier than I was six months ago. My running distance and time have increased.


Six months ago, I was just starting to run. I could only run about a block in half an hour. It was not just because I was told not run very far with my new minimalist shoes. It was because I could not run very far. A block in half an hour might be a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much.


Now, even though I only run two to three times a week, I can run three to four miles in half an hour. No land speed records to be sure. But the distance and time are big accomplishments compared to where I started. Which is the key, of course. We should only ever compare ourselves to where we have come from and how close we are to where we are going.


That is true in all of life. I tell the athletes I coach to check their egos at the door. They should only compete against themselves except at actual competitive events. They should work harder to get better for themselves. In this one thing, I actually take my own advice. I only compete against and compare myself to myself.


The tale of the tape is not the only measure of success, but in weight, waist, and running distance, I believe I have had a bit of success in the past six months. Of course, the true test will be whether I can sustain a lifestyle of healthy living, but I do not think it will be too difficult. After all, results speak volumes and increase motivation. Even if I did forget to mention a significant indicator that tells me I am getting healthier.
