Calisthenics · 14 March 2013

Sit ups and push ups and pull ups. Oh my! Sit ups and push ups and pull ups. Oh my! Sit ups and push ups and pull ups. Oh my!

While people might approach simple exercises like sit ups, push ups, and pull ups with the same dread Dorothy Gale and her band approached the dark forest on their way to Oz, calisthenics are a great way to get in at least a little exercise each day.

I was young, but I remember the late Jack LaLanne being on TV giving people a workout long before there were any gyms to join or fancy routines to buy. He was probably the father of fitness, but he would probably shudder to think that most people would rather pay gym dues (whether they go or not) than do something simple like calisthenics to get or keep fit. While I was a bit young to watch Mr. LaLanne in his prime, I think doing simple body weight exercises every day like he did is something anybody can do.

My routines are pretty simple and take little time, but I do them. At least five days a week. Maybe that is why I do not approach calisthenics with dread. Instead, I think, “Sit ups and push ups and pull ups. Oh yeah!”
