I Am a Writer · 18 May 2013

I really am a writer. I may not be a great writer, but I am a writer. Some days my posts even prove it. But it is not looking like today will be one of them.

I used to think that I was an aspiring writer. That I would be a writer someday. Now, after blogging for a bunch of years and writing this crazy daily blog for the last few month, I can say with conviction that I am a writer. I have believed this before, but the thought was always fleeting. For some reason, today I feel like a full-fledged writer.

The question of being a writer is really like the philosophical question: “If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

For the tree, the answer is, “Of course.” After all, sound is a physical phenomenon that we can record, measure, and prove exists. We do not need to be around to know it happens.

The same is true for being a writer. A writer is still a writer even if he has no readers. Maybe even if he has not published anything. At least that is the conclusion I have come to after all these years of posting blogs that few people ever read.

The thing that measures whether a person is a writer is merely whether he is writing. Publishing is great, but writing is what defines a writer.

So whether or not this post proves it or not. (Especially with this sentence structure or lack thereof.) And whether or not I have even one reader today or any day. I really am a writer.
