I Tried to Write You a Love Song · 5 January 2000

   D             A              D
I tried to write you a love song
  G                             A                     D
But the words just never came out right
      G                          A               D         A        G
I struggled on the first line and then on every word
          G                                                         A
But nothing could say you’re my love, my life

First Refrain:
    G                     A
I tried to say I love you
         G               A
And that I truly care
       G                  A
To say I really need you
        G                            A
And that I’ll always be there
          G                      A
That you’re my one and only
        G                      A
And I’ll always be true
              G                           A
But the only words that came out
            G  A   D
Were “I love you.”

I tried to write you a love song
It took me three years to get this far
Every word had to be just right to say you’re my one true love
And tell the world how wonderful you are

Second Refrain:
I tried to say you’re beautiful
And I have eyes only for you
That you’re my truest friend
Loyal, tried and true
That you’re my one and only
And I’ll always be true
But the only words that came out
Were “I love you.”

I tried to write you a love song
I guess that this is the best one that I’ve got
I wish I was a poet so I could say what’s in my heart
I hope three little words are gonna be enough

Third Refrain:
Enough to say I love you
And that I truly care
To say I really need you
And I’ll always be there
That you’re my one and only
And I’ll always be true
But the only words that came out
Were “I love you.”

‘Cause yes, I do.

You know I
                 Love
                 You.
