Being a Responsible Writer · 30 October 2012

I want to be a responsible writer, but I cannot help making the claim: “Health is all about food.”

As I said in the beginning of this journey, there have been many factors leading up to my almost vegan eating. One of the most important factors has been the movie, Forks Over Knives. That movie pointed me to a book I have yet to read, The China Study, which points to food being the key to health. More pointedly, it is supposed to point to eating a whole food plant-based diet in order to stay away from cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other preventable maladies.

Even though I have not yet read the book, I cannot help but point to a vegan or almost vegan diet as being the key to health. Part of this change in attitude is that I have seen many changes in my own body so far. But the bigger part is that I have gotten too much bad news lately.

Yesterday, my parents told me that one of my uncles had suffered a stroke. And even before I started changing my diet, they had told me about two of my aunts fighting against cancer or something similarly devastating. Both my parents, some of my aunts, and uncles, and one of my brothers have diabetes. It cannot all be genetics because of bloodlines. But it is not too much of a leap to believe it must be diet.

(I am obviously not against advancements in health care such as pharmaceuticals, surgery, and the like, but I am against the thinking that a pill or procedure will cure all our ills. We need to eat right first and then figure out if we need to have more help.)

I suppose that saying I believe diet is the most important part of health does not make me an irresponsible writer. After all, at the very least, I have the movie to back me up. Still, I want to have more data to make my claims than one movie and what I have seen happening to my own body for a few months. But there are times when I need to go with my gut and the timing of things instead of waiting for research or data. So I make the claim that health is all about food. Even if it seems to go against being a responsible writer.
