Broccoli Snack · 18 December 2012

I never would have guessed that broccoli would become one of my favorite snack foods. Or that I would at least be trying to make it so.

When we were kids, my sister called broccoli “trees.” We had those trees in stir fry and other dishes, but rarely did we eat them raw. As we got older, I remember having raw trees with lots of dressing on them. The other day, I decided that those little trees were going to become a snack food. After all, I can just rinse them off and shove them in my mouth. Then, chew, chew, and chew some more.

I was struck the other day by how chewy and crunchy raw broccoli is. The crunchy satisfies some snack need and the chewy makes it tough to gobble down a bunch at a time. As an added bonus, chewing for a while gives the digestive tract a little time to see if the gauge reads full or empty. I find eating just a few pieces of broccoli to be satisfying to both the ears and stomach.

Even though broccoli has not quite replaced chips as one of my favorite snack foods, I would like it to be. After all, if I eat chips too fast, I beat up my mouth and still want to come back for more. I can eat a big bag of chips and only feel sick and remorseful afterward. I cannot eat too much broccoli before feeling full and I still get to hear the crunch of each bite like I do with the chips. And I actually like the little trees a lot more than I did as a kid.

I know it sounds crazy and I never would have guessed it, but broccoli is becoming one of my favorite snack foods.
