Leg Cramps · 5 March 2013

I used to get leg cramps all the time. Now, even though I am running more, I get less.

I thought about it today because I cramped up after my long run the other day. But they only lasted until I got a drink of water. And they were not as intense as I have had before.

I have drunk water to get rid of cramps for as long as I can remember. But I do not ever remember drinking a glass of water and immediately relieving my cramps. Slight or severe cramps have always lingered until the water and maybe a banana hit my system. Until recently. Recently, I have been able to drink a bit of water and the cramps are gone almost instantaneously.

I remember a time when I was in pretty good shape, but had played three basketball games in one day. Several of my teammates and I got severe cramps during our last game. It was debilitating long after I drank water.

I am not sure, but I do not think the difference between now and then is my level of fitness.

The difference in my health now and before is probably my eating. As I eat more whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables, there are enough nutrients in my body to help absorb the water quickly and alleviate the cramps. Plus there is water in the food. At least that seems like a logical explanation.

While I am not sure of the reasons, I know that something is making me less prone to cramps than I used to be. Maybe it is being in better shape. Maybe it is drinking more water. Or maybe it is the water in the foods. Regardless of the reason, I am glad that I am not getting leg cramps all the time anymore.
